The culture of a team is defined by the example of responsibility and accountability demonstrated by the leader; that of their own actions, and that of the actions of the entire team. Good, bad, and ugly, the leader shoulders the blame for the negative outcomes of the team, and while has some accountability for the good outcomes, the leader never takes the credit for it. Through the observance of negative outcomes, the role of the leader is to acknowledge them, own them, remove the barriers that led to failure, and guide the team through acceptance and re-direction.
As the leader takes responsibility s/he demonstrates a character that will translate to and seed within all team members.
